How common is Separatism

Where did Sovereignty come From?

Nothing New to separatism. Quebec has always had separatists.  Alliance Laurentienne 1957  RIN (Rally for Independent Nation) 1962 provincial political party.  ASIQ “Action Socialists for an Independent Quebec” 1965 (communist part advocating Quebec’s independence)

Montreal Expo Canada’s 100’th Birthday  President of France comes.  Makes a speech and says. “vive le Quebec libre” (long live an independent Quebec)  Quebec separation movement begins.

Baby Boomers (Hippies)  Average Family size 1951 in English Canada 3.1 children  Average family size in 1951 in Quebec 3.9 children By 1969 this population is large and powerful. This means Quebec had one of the most active and angry hippie movements in the world.

PM Lester Pearson Studies “Bilingualism” & “Bi-culturalism” means -Two languages in one country -Two cultures in one country The studies agree that Quebec would be happier if they felt more apart of the rest of Canada.

Step #1 Change the Flag

Step #2 change the official language to official language“S” Official Languages Act  Recognize that Canada speaks two languages everywhere.  Belief that speaking both languages was an advantage to citizens.  All labels and signs in both languages  More French in government.  Young people must learn French in school.

The Reaction Not Enough!!Too much!!  In Quebec there should be NO ENGLISH on labels.  Quebec should not have to learn English!  Quebec should say what flag they like!  Only 5% of English provinces even speak French.  English people have no need to use French  The Old flag is just fine

Rene Levesque “Parti Quebecois”  Was an MP in the liberal party of Canada  Quits the liberal party and starts a Quebec separatist party.  Wants Quebec to use their votes to separate, not violence.

Where is this sign from?

More people in western Canada speak Mandarin than French.  Why isn’t Mandarin an official language?  Should English Canada have to try to make Quebec happy?

The Reaction in Canada to Official Language Act.
