2. Parts of Speech – what are they? Nouns Verbs Adjectives Adverbs Pronouns ???

3. Nouns Definition: Person, place, thing or idea Examples: student, school, pencil, knowledge Watch out! Nouns can sometimes look like verbs. Example: “Walking” NOUN: Walking is healthy. VERB: She is walking.

4. Verbs Definition: the action Examples: jump, think, talks, is falling Watch out! Verbs aren’t always physical actions that you can see. Examples: is, are, was, were, has, have

5. Adjectives Definition: words that describe nouns Examples: huge, happy, loving, rich, short Watch out! Adjectives can often be turned into adverbs. Examples: “quick” and “quickly” Adjective: He was quick on the track. Adverb: He runs quickly.

6. Adverbs Definition: words that describe verbs, adding where/when/how the verbs happen Examples: slowly, easily, tomorrow, nearby Watch out! Adverbs don’t always end in ‘ly”. Examples: “yesterday” Tim went to the story yesterday. Tells the reader when Tim ‘went’.

7. Pronouns Definition: a substitute for a noun Examples: it, his, her, he, she, they, we, their Watch out! The pronoun can come in the same sentence as the noun it’s substituting, or a different sentence. Examples: Mark is going to his friend’s for dinner. After dinner, he will go to the movies.
