4 What is Tone? Definition: In art, tone refers to the degree of lightness or darkness of an area. Tone varies from the bright white of a light source through shades of gray to the deepest black shadows.

5 How we perceive the tone of an object depends on its actual surface lightness or darkness, color and texture, the background and lighting. Tone is may be used broadly ('global tone') to denote the major planes of an object; realist artists use 'local tone' to accurately denote subtle changes within the plane.

6 Tones in Art Look very carefully at the images which follow on the next slides. They are both in lack and white. Look at the tonal range Can you see where the light shines on the subject, their faces, clothing? How important is it in art to show the various tones? For 5 merits who can name what varying tone adds to image

7 The winner is…. It makes an object look more three dimensional, so therefore more lifelike.

13 Shading Tasks Complete the Zone System Worksheet Use pencil to add the different tones. Start with either the lightest tone or the darkest one. Complete the ST Francis Church image. Complete the various tones. Again, begin with either the lightest or darkest tones to ensure that you have a range of tone

14 Assessment-Which level are you working towards? LEVEL 3 You can shade in the darkest tones and the lightest tones in a basic fashion. You can evaluate showing awareness of how to make improvements to your work LEVEL 4 You can shade in the lightest and darkest tones and one other tone and your work is quite neat. You can evaluate how to make improvements and make changes to your work. LEVEL 5 You can shade in the lightest, darkest, mid- tones and your work is highly presentable. You can evaluate and reflect on your own opinion of its purpose and meaning. You are able to make changes and improve your work.
