Welcome to Lewannick CP School Curriculum Event 5 Assessment A love of life through a love of learning…

Aims Assessment in EYFS Assessment in the new national curriculum Assessment at Lewannick School How can I support my child at home?

Assessment in EYFS 0 During the final year of the EYFS (Reception), we carry out ongoing (formative) assessment to support each pupil’s learning and development. We record assessments using post-its, WOW stars, photos, and observation sheets. We also use information from home to inform our assessments. Our assessments enable us to plan the provision needed to enable them to take the next steps in their learning. 0 In the final term of the EYFS, we review all the information from all sources to make a judgement for each pupil, for each ELG. 0 https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/u ploads/attachment_data/file/488745/EYFS_handboo k_2016_-_FINAL.pdf (Page 23) https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/u ploads/attachment_data/file/488745/EYFS_handboo k_2016_-_FINAL.pdf

Tracking Assessment 0 Our ongoing assessment records are put into the Learning Journey. This provides the pupil and parents with a record of progress and achievement during the Reception year. Every half- term, we formally record each child’s band and stage, for each area of learning, using iTrack (our school’s tracking system). We use the Development Matters document to inform our assessment: http://www.foundationyears.org.uk/files/2012/03/Developmen t-Matters-FINAL-PRINT-AMENDED.pdf (Page 9) http://www.foundationyears.org.uk/files/2012/03/Developmen t-Matters-FINAL-PRINT-AMENDED.pdf

The Assessment Process

Baseline Assessment 0 This year was the first year of a standardised national baseline assessment for Reception pupils. The assessment provides a ‘progress floor standard’, which will be based on the progress made by children between reception and the end of key stage 2. 0 The baseline assessment sits within our broader teacher assessments against the EYFSP.

National Curriculum 0 In September 2014, a new National Curriculum became statutory in all local authority-maintained schools. 0 'Levels' of attainment are no longer in existence and pupils are assessed under a grading system. 0 Along with this change, the bar has been raised for learning, with expectations for progress and attainment, at their most challenging yet.

Changes in assessment The key phrase: primary education needs to be focused on ensuring that pupils are ‘year end ready’ and at the end of Year 6, ‘secondary ready’ No National Curriculum levels Schools devise own systems for formative assessment, tracking and feedback Statutory testing at KS1 and 2 will continue New tests in summer 2016

Assessment at Lewannick 0 All subjects are assessed using a variety of methods: http://lewannick.cornwall.sch.uk/wp- content/uploads/2015/12/Assessment-at-Lewannick- CP-School-Dec-2015.pdf 0 How do we track pupil progress in English and Maths? What does this look like? (see Maths progress example) 0 How do we track pupil progress in the other curriculum subjects? (see Foundation tracking example)

Assessment at Lewannick 0 Alongside other teachers at Lewannick and other academy schools, we regularly moderate the chidren’s writing and share good practice. 0 Teachers also attend Local Authority training and moderation events throughout the year. 0 The Local Authority also has a statutory moderation process to quality assure assessment judgements within schools.

National Statutory Assessment (SATs) 0 In June, Year 1 pupils will sit a phonics screening check. This a statutory test that must be completed. They have to decode 40 words, some of which are pseudo-words. The pass rate has always been 32/40. Results of your child's test will be provided as part of their end of year report. 0 Pupils take SATS (Statutory Assessment Tests) in Years 2 and 6 (end of Key stage 1 and 2). The tests are in Reading, Mathematics, and SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar). https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_d ata/file/439489/Sample_ks1_Englishreading_paper2_readingbooklet.pdf https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_d ata/file/439346/Sample_ks2_Englishreading_readingbooklet.pdf
