ACE IT with PAT ACE is the process of creating instructional visuals –Analyze –Create (PAT) Perceptions (figure-ground, hierarchy, gestalt) Actions (contrast, repetition, alignment, proximity) Tools (type, shape, color, depth, space) –Evaluate 12

ACE 13

PAT under “Create” PAT is the model used to “create” visuals. (see slide 12) PAT stands for Perceptions, Actions, and Tools –Perceptions include figure-ground, hierarchy, gestalt –Actions include contrast, repetition, alignment, proximity –Tools include type, shape, color, depth, space 14

Perception – Figure/Ground 15

Perception - Hierarchy 16

Perception - Gestalt The whole is greater than the sum of its parts! Concourse A Concourse B Concourse C Concourse D McDonalds International Terminal 17

Gestalt 1 - Closure 18

Gestalt 2 - Contiguity 19

Gestalt 3 - Similarity 20

Gestalt 4 - Proximity 21

Gestalt 5 - Experience 22

Actions 23

A - Contrast 24 Make things different to catch your eyes

A - Repetition 25 Reusing same elements to make it look consistent

A - Alignment 26 Different types of alignments create different visual effects

A - Proximity 27 Moving things close together or far apart creates a different effect

Tools TYPE (typography – different fonts) COLOR (color does make a difference) SPACE (separate elements) SHAPE (line, arrow, circle, clip art…) DEPTH (size, dimension, and texture) 28

Conclusion The goal is to manipulate TOOLS using ACTIONS to create effective visuals that can facilitate learner PERCEPTIONS. 29
