Thermal Multifragmentation: Experimental Study of Process Dynamics Spinodal State of Nuclear Matter Project FASA-3 Summer practice 2011, JINR Dubna

Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Dubna, Russia Dzhelepov Laboratory of Nuclear Problems Supervisor: dr Waldemar Karcz (JINR Dubna) Project participant: Nowak Kacper (Poland) Radomiak Dawid (Poland)

Main Aim of the Project Collision of relativistic proton with heavy nucleus

Multifragmentation Multifragmentation—a process of an explosive type—is the main decay mechanism for highly excited nuclei. Nuclear multifragmentation takes a very short time to complete and is characterized by multiple production of intermediate-mass fragments (3≤Z≤20). This process takes place after substantial expansion of a nucleus under the action of the thermal pressure. Investigations of nuclear matter at low densities and high excitation energies provide information about the liquid–fog and liquid–gas phase transitions in final nuclei.

Experiment equipment description The outward appearance of the contemporary FASA setup is shown in Pic. 1. A metal frame ~1m in diameter forms a mechanical base of the construction. The frame is shaped as a dodecahedron with 12 facets for Polar θ and azimuthal ϕ angles of the telescope–spectrometers of the FASA setup with respect to the beam vector fastening ten flanges with detectors and two more flanges used to install the entire construction at the beam axis. Detectors are also attached to the latter two flanges except for their center parts, where the beam passes through the entrance and exit pipes.
