2 Indicators for Measuring Level of Development Infrastructure The basic foundations of an economy Transportation, sanitation, education, etc. GDP Gross Domestic Product The value of all goods and services produced within a country Per Capita Income The GDP divided by the population to give an average income per person Literacy Rate Percentage of people in a country that can read and write Life Expectancy Average number of years a person lives

3 Levels of Development Countries are categorized as either Less Developed Countries Newly Industrialized Countries More Developed Countries

4 Less Developed Countries (LDCs) Low GDP and per capita GDP Limited economic development Lack of an industrial base (secondary economic activities) Higher proportion of primary activities Lower literacy rates (possibly a disparity between men and women) Lower life expectancy (poor health care)

5 More Developed Countries (MDCs) High GDP and per capita GDP Extensive economic development Higher proportion of tertiary and quaternary economic activities High literacy rates with gender equality High life expectancies (good health care)

6 Newly Industrialized Countries (NICs) Countries moving from LDC status to MDC status Showing in gains in one or more of the the categories of development Higher proportion of secondary economic activities
