3 Lab Safety  Most students are smart enough to know not to touch a burning stove, run with knives, or drink dangerous chemicals.  Using basic safety knowledge, we will solve Lab safety problems in groups.  Read the situation and solve the problem.

4 What is wrong with this picture? Hair needs to be tied back.

5 What piece of lab safety equipment is missing?

6 If you wanted to smell an unknown liquid, what could you do? WAFT or wave fumes toward your nose.

7 Why shouldn’t we eat in the lab? Chemical residue or bacteria from specimens can get you sick!

8 She is on fire! What do you do??? Cover her with a fire blanket!

9 What is wrong here? Never point a hot test tube toward your face. It can splash water in your face.

10 What is wrong with this work area? MESSY! Keep work area neat. Keep backpacks UNDER the table (so you don’t get chem/bacteria residue on them).

11 Lab Safety Do’s and Don’ts  Pick one of the lab safety rules and illustrate a student doing it right AND wrong. Make sure to write out the rule above your drawing.  Add color for extra points.  The best Drawings will go up on the wall.

12 Handle all living organisms in a humane manner and with respect.
