1. Tool kit for making Carnival Lanterns

2. First, talk about Carnivals then choose a theme

3. Design Stage Experiment with lots of sketches in your design booklets or sketchpads. Start with basic shapes and build up to 3D. Then from there, think about adding colour, pattern, character or expressions.

4. Essential tools and materials
PVA glue
withies
center cane
masking tape
scissors

wet strength
tissue
coloured
tissue
masking tape
sponges
secateurs
plastic tubs
Optional extras include: plastic covering, glitter, torches or battery powered tea lights.

5. Making Working in pairs, prepare 10cm lengths of masking tape and join the sticks together. Start with the end of the tape and wrap firmly around the join.

6. Cut the sticks to length and create 2 dimensional withy templates.

7. Start to connect the flat shapes together to make them into 3 dimensional forms.

8. Make a cross bar inside the frame to attach the torch or tea light to, before covering with the wet strength tissue.

9. Covering the Lanterns Wet the tissue on both sides with 1:2 part solution of PVA to water with a sponge. Then wrap one end of the wet tissue around one of the sticks and continue to slightly overlap each piece as you go.

10. Decorating the lanterns Ordinary coloured tissue can be used to great effect for decoration.

11. Displaying and parading with the lanterns Attach a wire or cane loop, and use a pole with a hook gaffer taped on for carrying your lantern, or hold the loop, switch on your light and you are ready to go!
