1 1. Real Time Transaction System As soon as they are booked they are removed from the available list. – No none else can book them An example of a real time transaction system would be a theatre / stadium seat booking system The real transaction means that the system is kept up to date – as soon as a Transaction takes place the system is updated. This means that future user always get to see a system that is correct / up to date In the above example a person or agent would search for available seats. If there are some available these are selected. As soon as these are selected all other users are “frozen out” / locked outof these seats - these seats appear as unavailable. The seats can then be booked.

2 2. Batch Processing Results next day – pay slips Batch Proc requires no interaction from a user Its therefore called a non interactive system – the user does not get immediate response from the system Data is gathered over a period of time At end of a period of time or when a certain amount is collected, the data is processed Together as a batch IA example of this is a payroll system Explain collect time cars over week Process at a quiet time eg over night

3 3. Real Time Control System An example of a real time control system would be a an automatic pilot system on a plane The real control means that the system immediately responds immediately to changes in the environment around it In the above example it would mean that the autopilot is set the plane has many sensors feeding back information to the system e.g. altitude, speed, attitude If any of these deviate from the setting the system responds immediately and corrects this. E.g. turbulence causes altitude to change As can be seen from the above example if the system does not respond immediately It coud cause disaster. The real time therefore means immediately eg. If a plane loses speed during an automatic landing if engine thrust is not applied immediately it could easily stall.
