2 Who were they?

3 Anti-federalists were states' rights advocates, backcountry farmers, poor farmers, the ill-educated and illiterate, debtors, & paper-money advocates.

4 Federalists-- Well educated and propertied class. Most lived in settled areas along the Atlantic seaboard.

5 On the Articles of Confederation... Anti- Federalists: Articles were a good plan. Federalists: Articles are weak and ineffective.

6 On a strong central government: Anti-federalists: Strong national government threatened state power; Constitution was created by aristocratic elements. Federalists: Strong national government needed to tax, regulate commerce and keep order.

7 Who should have the power? Anti-federalists: the people should have the power, not the government Federalists: Men of experience, education, and talent should govern.

8 The Bill of Rights: Anti-federalists: The constitution needed a bill of rights to protect citizens. Federalists: state constitutions and state governments protected individual freedoms.

9 Who argued for each side? Anti-federalists: Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, Federalists: 85 essays by Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, James Madison
