1 Working Together to Help Our Schools What is CPC?

2 Citizen Planning Committee Chartered by the Edmonds School District Board of Directors

3 Mission Statement “To examine the long-range needs and issues of the school district and provide recommendations to the Board of Directors.”

4 Board Direction Each year we meet with the Board to establish our direction Subcommittees are then formed to address the topics identified

5 Committee is Long Lived We are beginning our 23 rd year CPC continues to exist because:  CPC addresses significant issues  Recommendations are taken seriously  The work is meaningful and fun!

6 All Schools Represented Each school principal is asked to appoint one representative Each board director may appoint one representative Appointments are for two-year terms Members are responsible for reporting back to their schools on CPC efforts Principal can revoke representative’s term for lack of attendance Principal may appoint an alternate representative

7 Meeting Schedule The subcommittees usually meet at 6:30 p.m., prior to the general meeting. The general meeting usually begins at 8:00 and ends promptly at 9:00 p.m. Meetings can be reversed, depending on the topics for that evening. Often there is a general discussion on a topic of interest to the large group during the general meeting.

8 Subcommittee Membership Each member joins one subcommittee Members can attend other subcommittee meetings at any time Members must attend at least 50% of a subcommittee’s meetings to vote in that committee (one vote per school or Board position)

9 Subcommittees for 2013-14 Boundaries and Enrollment Education Facilities and Operations

10 Boundaries and Enrollment In general, this subcommittee will study current enrollment trends at all our schools. Boundaries will be reviewed in connection with the enrollment study. The subcommittee will review the efficacy of the “soft” boundary changes implemented in the Northeast Quad Work with Facilities and Operations

11 Education In general, this subcommittee will help to create the Edmonds Strategic direction 2020 This subcommittee will process the District’s interest in continuing with the state waiver to support continuous professional development for teachers

12 Operations In general, this subcommittee will conduct a comprehensive review of District facilities and identify needs to support all-day kindergarten program and other new state funded initiatives, leading to potential recommendations This subcommittee will work with Boundaries and Enrollment

13 General Topics General topics to consider this year:  2014 Replacement Levy  District Funding 101  Common Core and Smarter Balance Assessment  Work to promote equity for all students  Other relevant topics

14 Your Role Attend meetings Try to be on time Work toward what’s best for your school and what’s best for the District (no personal/single agenda Report back to your school, communicate with your principal, gather input – you are the link between CPC and your school Respect the opinions of others

15 Your Role Bylaws require regular communication with the principal and parents of your school regarding CPC activities Meet with principal to establish two- way communication process  Between you and principal  Between you, principal and parents  Determine subcommittee participation

16 Role of Alternate Alternates should be able to continue the work of primary representative in his/her absence Alternates may attend the meetings, however they do not have voting rights unless he/she is serving as primary representative

17 Role of Alternate Recommended that alternate attends same subcommittee as the primary representative, unless principal and alternate determine it would be beneficial to attend a different subcommittee

18 Communication Strategies – Principal Provide copy of CPC minutes for principal’s use with follow up, as needed; or Set regular meeting time in person or via phone following CPC meeting; or E-mail summary of meeting to principal with follow up as needed

19 Communication Strategies -- Parents Principal uses information from you to present at parent meeting; and/or Use established school processes, e.g. newsletter, web page, email, etc.; and/or You attend parent meetings, as invited by principal, to provide information

20 Communication Protocol CPC rep and principal determine what and how much information to share Subcommittees help to determine messaging and timing  Subcommittees may be in the exploration stage with certain concepts of its work and sharing the information with the school communities may be premature

22 Code of Conduct “Big Picture” perspective Be open to various opinions, ideas Be flexible Seek first to understand, and then be understood Common courtesy
