1 Welcome to 5 th Grade Curriculum Night Parents, You are your child’s first and most important teacher. Thank you for sharing your child with us this year.

2 Talk With Your Child(ren) and Us What can we talk about with our child(ren)? Use binders, daily emails, and newsletters Wiki – newsletters are on Mrs. Felcher’s page ParentConnect/MiStar – we send daily emails through this Warner listserv

3 Homework Using the Daily Folder Setting up a time and a place Nightly Math and Reading M-Th (occasional math on Fridays) Signing and returning homework letters (an email will be sent out with a “heads up” to be on the lookout for one)

4 Read, Read, Read!! Establishing reading habits Ways to share reading Focus on Comprehension Strategies– Reader’s Workshop & CRAFT (bookmark) 20-30 minutes a night Visit the Library regularly

5 Literacy CRAFT CAFÉ is an acronym that stands for: Comprehension Response to the text Accuracy Fluency Text features/structures These become our goals, and the strategies we use to be successful with our goals are posted below them.

6 Write, Write, Write!! Writer’s Workshop – “study” based learning Share your writing The “Friday Read Around” and Writing Circles “Unpacking” our thinking Mondays and a weekly prompt Word study – look at various figurative language, poetry, and parts of speech

7 Mastering Math Concepts and Computation- Bridges 6 TH – CMP2 is problem solving based ALL students do Number Corner to bridge concepts between grade levels Ways to Practice – nightly homework/games/WIKI sites on Mrs. Felcher’s page/MOBY Max Pre-tests, differentiation, clinics Mastery of Multiplication Fast Facts is a MUST!

9 Growing our Garden of Leaders 1. Be Proactive I am a responsible person, I take initiative., I chose my actions, attitudes, and moods, I do not blame others for my wrong actions, and I do the right thing without being asked, even when no one is looking. 2. Begin with the End in Mind I plan ahead and set goals, and I look for ways to be a good citizen. 3. Put First Things First I say no to things I know I should not do, I set priorities, make a schedule, and follow my plan, and I am disciplined and organized. 4. Think Win-Win I balance courage for getting what I want with consideration for what others want, I make deposits in other’s Emotional Bank Accounts, when conflicts arise, I look for third alternatives. 5. Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood I listen to other people’s ideas and feelings without interrupting and I try to see things from their viewpoints. 6. Synergize I value other people’s strengths and learn from them, and I get along well with others, even people who are different than me. 7. Sharpen the Saw I take care of my body by eating right, exercising, and getting sleep, I spend time with my family and friends, I learn in lots of ways and places, not just at school, and I take time to find meaningful ways to help others.
