2 FDEP Nitrogen reduction plan & New TMDL limits As a part of our nitrogen reduction strategy we have established a 23% reduction target as our Total Nitrogen TMDL for our annual load (6) You might be asking yourself how we plan to meet this We plan on meeting this standard by instituting Best Management Practices for local residents to control storm water runoff Best Management Practices for our Agricultural industries Utilizing our current and proposed water storage, treatment and water flow utilities We have also instituted Low impact development which employs land planning, design practices, and technologies to conserve natural resources and reduce infrastructure costs (7)

5 Nitrogen reduction plan & Key players  Best Management Plans for residents (8) Do not fertilize before a heavy rain Never fertilize within 10 feet of any water body If you spill fertilizer on the lawn pick up what can as opposed to washing it into the ground If you spill fertilizer on a hard surface sweep up what you can and place it back into the bag for reuse at a later time Key players for this section will our local community residents

6 Nitrogen reduction plan & Key players  Best Management Plans for agriculture (9) Do not store fertilizers where they might be rained on - this will prevent the fertilizer from being washed into the local waterways Always load fertilizer machines away from surface waters to avoid contamination – If possible load machines on a concrete pad so spills will not seep into the waterway Fertilization will no longer be allowed during the rainy season here in Florida which occurs between May and October – This will prevent a vast majority of the nitrogen from making it’s way into the Estuary and local waterways Our key players for this section will be the FDEP for monitoring purposes and our Agricultural leaders who implement these BMP’s

7 Community/Environmental Involvement  Here at the FDEP we want to keep everyone informed of the progress we are making to lower the nitrogen levels in the estuary All sampling results will be posted to our website as we get the annual results summary report Our Parks and Recreation department will also post reports on their webpage about the levels of algae and fish kills in our rivers and lakes The Mayors and City Council have agreed to have quarterly town hall meetings with local farmers and residents to brief them on the progress being made And finally there is an environmental hotline that residents may contact to receive information on our progress (1-800-324-SAFE) as well as report any environmental concerns that they may have (see something, say something)

8 Closing remarks/Q & A Session We have covered a lot of information today about our new nitrogen reduction plan, this presentation will made available on our website for future viewing. With our Best Management practices and everyone doing their part we will be set to surpass our goal of a 23% nitrogen reduction by 10% giving us an actual 33% reduction in nitrogen load and keeping the Caloosahatchee Estuary clean and enjoyable for people to enjoy years from now.
