Lake Anna Civic Association TMDL IP Monitoring October 27, 2012 Kenneth Remmers, LACA Water Quality Chairman

Background LACA is a DEQ certified Level III Water Quality Monitoring Program We have been collecting WQ data at Lake Anna since 1999. Volunteers collect over 24 sites four times a year at Lake Anna. LACA is very interested in the Upper York Watershed as it effects the WQ of the lake.

Locations of LACA Water Quality Stations

York River Basin above Lake Anna

TMDL IP for Terrys Run and Pamunkey Creek Terrys Run and Pamunkey Creek are Sub-watersheds of the Upper York River Watershed and are on the “impaired” list for bacteria. LACA has subcontracted with the Culpeper SWCD to monitor e-coli in these two sub-watersheds in Orange County, VA. LACA is performing “hot spot” evaluations for bacteria on these two sub-watersheds. Hotspot assessments will aid CSWCD in their focus of agricultural and residential BMP’s

PLAN LACA collaborated with DCR, DEQ and CSWCD to come up with sites for bacteria “Hotspot” monitoring. Decided to collect samples four times a year for e-coli at 9 sites on Pamunkey Cr and 8 sites on Terrys Run and have DCLS Lab evaluate them. For twelve months Coliscan data will be analyzed and compared to lab data for the same sites. Physical data for Temperature, Dissovled Oxygen, pH, Specific Conductivity, and ambient conditions will be conducted for all twelve months.

Program from Here LACA will continue to collect data to complete the entire year of sampling. Will provide the results to DCR, CSWCD, and DEQ on a monthly basis to be used for input to BMP. All data is also put on the DEQ Citizen’s Water Quality website for anyone to use. Expect to work with DEQ on evaluating the effectiveness of using lower cost Coliscan data vs expensive Lab analysis for these types of projects. A summary report will be published at the conclusion of the project
