Section 1: Early Influences Political ideals of English colonists: limited government Limited government is the idea that while people need some government to maintain order, the government’s powers need to be carefully limited leaving some powers and freedom to the people representative government Representative government is the idea that those in charge must be chosen by the people and operate in the interest of the people (unlike monarchs whom receive their power by birth and can act in their own interest)

The governor of each colony served as the chief executive for that colony’s government. Governors were appointed or elected. Assemblies of elected representatives existed in most colonies. Assemblies and councils served to limit governor’s power.
