7 1 st President Sam Houston is elected in a landslide September 1836 Makes Houston the first capital Elected again as the third president

8 2 nd President Mirabeau Lamar is elected because Houston cannot serve back to back terms September 1838 Moves capital to Austin

13 Statehood 1845-present  Texas is annexed (added) to the U.S. in 1845 as the 28th state  Texas becomes the only state in the union to have once been a country
