2 Political Characteristics Government was monarchy, then dictatorship, then democracy Started out with 1 king then went to 2 Kings: Inachus, Phoroneus, Argus, Triopas, Ageriar, Abas, Lasus. Argos constantly rivaled Corinth and Athens Empress Pheidon was taken down by a small war with another city-state

3 Economic Characteristics Invented Coinage Used barter system: Trading goods or services for other goods Ancient Argos was credited with inventing the coin system: 6 obols=1 drachma 100 drachma=1 minae 600 minae=1 talent Typical costs of goods: loaf of bread-1 obol gallon of olive oil-5 drachmas shoes-8-12 drachmas slaves-200-300 drachmas houses-400-1000 drachmas

4  Argos is located on the Peloponnese peninsula, between Corinth and Sparta  The summers are hot and dry, and the winters are rainy and moderate, which makes growing possible throughout the year  The average rainfall is between 20 and 40 inches a year  There are 50-100 people per square mile  Major resources in Argos are olives, olive oil, figs, honey, and cheese because of the big goat population  The main land use is grazing, ranching, crops and livestock Geographical Characteristics

5 Social Characteristics Religion Their religion is called Argolid (means bright light) Argos patron/god was Hera She was the wife and sister of Zeus Argos symbols were pomegranate and peacock feathers Arts Argos was very into the arts, they built stone sculptures of athletes Most famous for the musicians, musicals, and poets
