2 INTRODUCTION Clinical assessment a measure to assess clinical competence. Competency could be achieved through successfully completing a skill / task within the given parameters In essence, clinical assessment is the measurement of clinical ability of the learner

3 Understandably competency denotes that : Effective educating of the learner took place Sufficient learning occurred Ability to perform has been achieved

4 EFFECTIVE EDUCATING OF THE LEARNER A motivated clinical educator A committed clinical educator A knowledgeable clinical educator A positive learner-mentor relationship

5 SUFFICIENT LEARNING The clinical environment congruent to the clinical practice needs of the learner Relevant clinical placement of the learner An effectively directed learner Able to transcend

6 ABILITY TO PERFORM Insight Relevant clinical decision making Ability to perform beyond the pre- scribed parameters of the skill / task

9 CONCLUSION Clinical assessment should be viewed beyond the ability of the learner’s behaviour to perform the skill/task but on the level of competency.
