Animations in GIMP GIMP Lesson 4 Animations: Chapter 3 pp. 107-115 Beginning GIMP From Novice to Professional

Animation in GIMP An animation is a sequence of frames played one after another like a cartoon An animation in GIMP is built from a series of layers. Layers are translated into frames that have a time associated with them The bottom layer will become the first frame in the animation and so on

Create a Base Image Create an image that is the total size you want for your animation This will become the temporary background layer You should think as small as possible for your image size because animation file size grows very large with the many frames

Add the Animation Object Now add each animation object in its own layer Position the object where you want it to start You will want to wait to name your layers until a later step

New Layers Added

Repeating Same Object If you are repeating the same object in each layer You can just duplicate the layer and then move the object to its new location You can hide layers or show layers as needed to get the positioning correct Don’t worry about any timing yet, we will add this later

Move Layers Up or Down

Give Each Frame a Background The final step for the animation is to give each frame its own background Duplicate the Background layer This new layer will be called Background copy Select the layer to be merged Choose Layers=>Merge Down This will merge the layer with this background Repeat for each layer, moving the Background Copy layer below the layer to be merged

Giving Layer a Background

Delete the Original Background Once you have finished merging the background into each frame Select the original Background layer and delete it Unless you want your animation to start with just the Background frame

Test Your Animation You can hide or show frames to check the order and placement of objects in the animation Run the animation by running the animation player Choose Filters=>Animation=>Playback The player will let you run or step through the animation

Test Your Animation

Playing the Animation Click the Play/Stop button to run the animation Use the Step button to step one frame at a time

Save As an Animated GIF Click on the “Select File Type” box to see expanded Save As list

Save As an Animation

Set Looping and Default Time

Fine Tuning Time of Frames Once the file is saved view the frames by opening the GIF in GIMP At this point you can modify the time for specific frames Double-click the layer and change the time in milliseconds Keep the parens (450ms)

Fine Tuning the Transitions Choose to combine frames or replace the frame with the new one Add (combine) to a frame to keep the frame while adding the next frame Add (replace) to swap between the two frames

Save and Final Changes Do a final Save on the GIMP animation Test the animation to make sure you don’t need and modifications

Summary GIMP allows the creation of frame-based animations similar to a flip book cartoon. The mechanism to create an animation is to use many layers The time and transformations between frames can be set Save your animation as a animated GIF
