4 Hemmingway’s writing style Minimalistic – based on journalistic experiences Short, choppy sentences Iceberg Theory – removing the fanciness makes the writing more interesting True meaning of the story should not be on the surface but is found in what the author does not tell us about the characters and events (1899-1961)

5 Indian Camp - click here for text click here for text Find a passage that shows Hemmingway’s short, direct writing style What is the tone, mood, and theme of this story? 1. How old might Nick be? 2. Why would Dr. Adams not have come prepared with the proper instruments? 3. What significance might Uncle George have in the story? 4. What might be Dr. Adams’ motivation or purpose in the story? 5. Why might Nick call his father “Daddy”? 6. What actually happens to the Indian woman’s husband? Why? 7. Why would Dr. Adams let Nick see this? 10 minutes to finish

6 Combining the Learning In your textbooks, read pages 610-617 – “Soldier’s Home.” Label papers Soldier’s Home and answer questions 1, 2, 3, 8 and 9 on page 619. Your responses should be detailed and complete. Use direct evidence from the story. Before we review the homework, spend a few minutes comparing your responses with your learning partner.

7 Add final question to your homework before turning in for assessment. Write down the question in your notes. Quietly – individually – books/notes are ok No edevices. Please put away at this time. What conclusions can you draw about Hemmingway’s writing style based on his short stories Indian Camp and Soldier’s Home? Use direct evidence from both stories to support your claim.
