‘Work Cited’: What is it? Works Cited is a list of sources (books, encyclopedias, web sites, newspapers, etc.)that you have used within your paper. You took ideas, information, and quotes of others. ‘Citing your source’ gives credit to the person who wrote it. Otherwise, you have plagerized!

If you use information another person wrote: You must ‘cite you source’, ‘work cited’ (another way of saying it)

What is the difference between a ‘Work Cited’ page and a ‘bibliography’? A works cited page is a list of works that you referenced in the body of your paper, whereas a bibliography is a list of all sources you used in your research.

A Works Cited may look like this…… Dean, Cornelia. "Executive on a Mission: Saving the Planet." New York Times. New York Times, 22 May 2007. Web. 25 May 2009. Was this from a book, a newspaper, a website? How can you tell? Who wrote it? When was it written?

Begley, S. (1998, January 19). Aping language. Newsweek 131, 56-58. Was this from a book, a newspaper, a website? How can you tell? Who wrote it? When was it written? A Works Cited may look like this……

When you ‘cite your source’ there is a very specific way you must write it out. Italicize the titles of books, magazines, films, etc. Dean, Cornelia. "Executive on a Mission: Saving the Planet." New York Times. New York Times, 22 May 2007. Web. 25 May 2009. “Quotation marks” go around “titles of poems, articles, and short stories.” Authors are listed by their last name first.

What is a ‘theory’? The definition of a theory is an idea to explain something, or a set of guiding principles You may have heard……… The theory of how the earth was created The theory of how humans came to be The theory of evolution (how people eveloved)

We will look at 6 theories for the decline of the Mayan Civilization Theory # 1: the population of Mayan cities grew faster than their farming systems could sustain Theory # 2: There was uncontrolled warfare Theory # 3: Mayan city states were invaded by groups from Central America Theory # 4: Climate change may have caused massive crop failure Theory # 5: Some huge catastrophic event (earthquake, tornado etc.) happened. Theory # 6: There was a huge civil war between the Mayan city- states that destroyed the culture

Now we will practice ‘citing our work’. 1) Choose one of the 6 theories on the collapse of the Mayan civilization 2) Research the theory (find info about it) 3) Search: Warfare caused the decline of the Mayan Civilization or Climate change and the decline of the Mayan Civilization 4) If something does not come up, try searching using different words 5) You must use two sources (online newspaper, magazine, website etc) Copy down 2 pieces of information that supports the theory

Cite the source: Where you got the information from. Source # 1 Source # 2 Make sure you follow the correct format

When you have your information, you will write a paragraph using the ‘work cited’ Sentence #1: State what theory you believe was the cause of the collapse I believe space aliens caused the collapse of the Mayan Civilization. Sentence # 2: First source of information Drawings of alien-like creatures were found in Mayan caves Sentence # 3: Second source of information Spaceship drawings were found carved in the temple walls Sentence # 4: In your own words, why this is the best theory Mayans would not have drawn these pictures if they had not seen them. Sentence #5: Restate the theory that you believe was the cause of the collapse Clearly, space aliens caused the destruction of the Mayan civilization as can be seen in the temple carvings of space aliens and space ships

My paragraph: I believe the theory that space aliens caused the collapse of the Mayan Civilization. “Drawings of alien-like creatures were found in Mayan caves.” “Spaceship drawings were found carved in the temple walls.” Mayans would not have drawn these pictures if they had not seen them. Clearly, space aliens caused the destruction of the Mayan civilization as can be seen in the temple carvings of space aliens and space ships

Works Cited: Chris, Crazy. “Aliens and the Mayans: The final Collapse." New York Times. New York Times, 22 May 2007. Web. 25 May 2009. Christina, Krazy. (1998, January 19). Alien Landing in Mayan Territory. Newsweek 131, 56-58.
