Objective: Students will solve algebraic equations using models.

Fraction Tile Procedures Keep tiles on the desk. Respect teacher direction of when to use tiles and when not to use tiles. Make sure everything you start with gets back in the bags. Take 3 minutes to become familiar with your tiles.

Warm-Up/Prior Knowledge Demonstrate equivalent fractions w/ fraction tiles Build 6/8 Build 2/3 Build 2 more equivalent fractions using the fraction tiles

When we are working with fractions we need common denominators which is another way of saying equivalent fractions.

Modeling If the Pacific Ocean covers 1/3 of Earth’s surface, and the Atlantic Ocean covers ¼ of Earth’s surface, find the fraction of Earth’s surface covered by both oceans.

Guided Shawna picked ¾ quart of blueberries. She ate 1/12 of the blueberries she picked. How much was left?

Independent It took Earl ½ hour to do his science homework and 1/3 hour to do his math homework. How long did Earl work on his homework?

Modeling A mouse weighs 1/6 pound more than a hamster. A hamster weighs ¼ pound. Write an equation that would show how much a mouse weighs, and evaluate your equation.

Guided Grace has ½ pound apples. Julie has 2/5 pound of apples. They want to combine their apples in a recipe that calls for 1 pound of apples. How many more pounds of apples do they need? Write and evaluate an equation.

Independent To make ¾ pound of mixed nuts, how many pounds of cashews would you add to 1/8 pound of almonds and ¼ pound of peanuts? Identify the correct equation and evaluate it. A.C + 1/8 – ¼ = ¾; C = ? B.C + 1/8 + ¼ = ¾ ; C = ? C.C – (1/8 + ¼) = ¾; C = ? D.C = ¾ + 1/8 + ¼; C = ?

Independent The Reed’s budget 1/3 of their income for rent and ¼ of their income for food. How much of their budget is left for clothing? Identify the correct equation and evaluate it. A.C = 1 + 1/3 + ¼; C = ? B.1/3 – ¼ - C = 1; C = ? C.1/3 + ¼ + C = 1; C = ? D.(1/3 - ¼) + C = 1; C = ?

Reflection How do you identify what your variable will represent in a word problem? What are some of the key words that tell you what to do in a word problem?
