The Virgin Suicides The Difference between truth and fiction.

Narrative Style The novel is not told by just one person. We also never find out who is telling it. We assume its boys from the neighbourhood. Stories are never told first hand there always ‘stories’ that have come from someone else therefore as the reader when don’t know how much of these stories are over exaggerated or even lies. Quotation from page 19. “ Most popular theory. Quotation from page 12. “ After rumours began”

Cecilia killed herself however Mrs Lisbon wants to believe that it was an ‘accident’. The truth is Cecilia did intend to kill herself, failing the first attempt ( slitting her wrist in the bath), but succeeding on the second ( throwing herself out of a window onto a fence). Mrs Lisbon is shown as in denial throughout the book. Quotation. “ Despite the severity of her wounds I do not think the patient truly meant to end her life.”

The cemetery workers strike. This strike didn’t worry the Lisbon family. Having 3 young children and them being young themselves. They feel that this strike wont effect them as they are all young… reality – All the children die. The youngest killing herself first. Quotation. “ Mr and Mrs Lisbon only in their forties, with a crop of young daughters, had given little thought to the strike.”

Suburbia. Suburbia, the symbolic home of American middle class happiness. Everything looks to be fine on the outside, everything seems normal and happy. However underneath its not, and the suicides show the impact upon this. The suburban neighbourhood lives up to the symbolic connotations – Quotation page 57. “Mr Krieger told Kyle to go over and sweep some and Mr Hutch sent Ralph and soon there we were all over at the Lisbon house, brushing walls and scrapping leaves.”

Identification and analysis of symbolism. The symbolism of the dead flies outside the Lisbon house.

The way the neighbourhood boys all think about the girls. The boys are all fascinated with the girls, and how they live. They all seem to come up with stories about what they have seen while being around them.

Quotations – Boys. “ He came back to us with stories.” “In the bathroom running the faucet to cloak the sounds of his search, Peter Sissen found Mary Lisbon’s secret cache of cosmetics tired up on a sock under the sink”
