Multiplying and Dividing by 10 And 100, 1000 etc

Multiplying a number by ten, makes all of its digits worth 10 times more, so they all shift along to the left one place. EG 234×10

Multiplying a number by ten, makes all of its digits worth 10 times more, so they all shift along to the left one place. EG 234×10 This was 2 × 100 + 3 × 10 + 4 × 1

Multiplying a number by ten, makes all of its digits worth 10 times more, so they all shift along to the left one place. EG 234×10 This was 2 × 100 + 3 × 10 + 4 × 1 Now it is 2 × 1000 + 3 × 100 + 4 × 10 to give 2340

Or in terms of place value houses: Millions 234 2340 ThousandsOnes The above diagram shows how each digit moves to the left by 1 place as it becomes worth 10 times more and the empty space in the ones column is filled with a zero as a place holder.

Similarly, multiplying a number by 100, makes all of its digits worth 100 times more, so they all shift along to the left two places. EG 234×100

Similarly, multiplying a number by 100, makes all of its digits worth 100 times more, so they all shift along to the left two places. EG 234×100 This was 2 × 100 + 3 × 10 + 4 × 1 And has become 2 × 10000 + 3 × 1000 + 4 × 100 = 23400

Or in terms of place value houses: Millions 234 23400 ThousandsOnes The above diagram shows how each digit moves to the left by 2 places as it becomes worth 100 times more and the empty spaces in the ones and tens columns is filled with a zero as a place holder.

Dividing by 10s This works exactly the same as multiplying, but the digits move to the right instead of the left. EG 54000 ÷ 100 =

Dividing by 10s This works exactly the same as multiplying, but the digits move to the right instead of the left. EG 54000 ÷ 100 = 540

Dividing by 10s This works exactly the same as multiplying, but the digits move to the right instead of the left. EG 54000 ÷ 100 = 540 The 5 was in the 10000 column but is now in the 100 column which is 100 times smaller. Similarly with the 4.
