3 © International Road Transport Union (IRU) 2009 Page 3 IRU Position  The IRU are in favour of ITS applications for the road transport sector as long as they provide significant measurable safety, environmental and economic benefits.  ITS applications must be standardised, harmonised and interoperable in order to improve effectiveness and reliability of transport as a whole.  The use of ITS applications should not hinder the transport buyers to maintain the freedom of choice for the means of transport they use.  Road transport operators shall maintain freedom of choice for ITS equipment/application suppliers  The IRU are in favour of ITS applications for the road transport sector as long as they provide significant measurable safety, environmental and economic benefits.  ITS applications must be standardised, harmonised and interoperable in order to improve effectiveness and reliability of transport as a whole.  The use of ITS applications should not hinder the transport buyers to maintain the freedom of choice for the means of transport they use.  Road transport operators shall maintain freedom of choice for ITS equipment/application suppliers
