1 The buildingSMART International Initiative
BIM workshop at ISO/TC 184/SC 4 plenary meeting Questions at END Website Øivind Rooth, buildingSMART International Jochen Haenisch, Jotne

2 What it is about: Interoperability

3 What is buildingSmart An international, neutral and non-profit organisation that supports openBIM. Organized as regional alliances, so-called chapters, for countries or groups of countries. Each chapter is an independent and is established to reflect local conditions. There are chapters in Europe, North America, Australia, Asia and the Middle-East. Develop and maintain international standards for openBIM.

4 What is openBIM A comprehensive approach to collaboration, design, construction and operation of built assets based on open standards and workflow. An initiative by buildingSMART and several leading software vendors to use the open buildingSMART data model (ISO 16739). Objectives: Support transparent and open workflows for all actors and independent of software tools. Enable transparent commercial conditions, comparable services and high data quality by a common language for building processes. Create lasting life-cycle repositories that grow with a built asset and its use. Encourage fair competition for "best of breed"-solutions.

6 Who is asking for openBIM
Who is asking for openBIM? Global Public Sector Mandates and Specifications AutoDesk Survey – International BIM Adoption Sept 2014 (presented at BIS Conference) BIM is being driven across the ecosystem for infrastructure projects Owners are implementing BIM standards Engineering firms are delivering BIM implementation plans and marketing BIM expertise Government agencies are exploring BIM for infrastructure projects BIM gives already a competitive advantage with owners and engineering firms for building projects

7 Who is asking for openBIM? Published BIM Mandates
As BIM adoption continues to grow around the world, governments are promoting its ability to eliminate waste on public projects and even mandating its use as part of construction sector reform, cost-saving efforts and climate change mitigation. – McGraw Hill Construction Smart Market Report – February 2014 AMER EMEA APAC U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) U.S. General Services Administration U.S. National Institute of Building Sciences U.S. Veterans Affairs New York City Department of Design and Construction State of Ohio General Service Division State Architect's Office State of Tennessee Office of the State Architect State of Maryland and Washington D.C. 8 UK Government Construction Strategy Goals
Why are all these parties interested in openBIM? UK Government Construction Strategy Goals

9 Global openBIM Status ISO/TC 59/SC 13/WG 13
USA & Singapore pioneered specifying openBIM for projects The UK has the only National public sector mandate Nordics are advanced in standards with some openBIM mandates Globally, openBIM requirements and Execution Plans for projects are ever increasing Frequently, benefits from new technologies drive adoption UK’s lead may not last, but its work will have a global impact if guidance such as PAS1192:2 is promoted to ISO. 1192 is a British family of standards. BSI 1192:2007 describes a framework for information management in building processes applicable to paper, CAD and BIM. BSI PAS 1192:2 specifies flow of information during the life cycle and defines exchange requirements in different phases. ISO/TC 59/SC 13/WG 13

10 buildingSMART International is changing
BIM is advancing across the world National bodies are not well placed to develop the needed standards quickly bSI seeks to become the INDUSTRY STANDARDS BODY for the built environment Quick review of Autodesk BIM implementation survey International Standards Hierarchy What do I mean when I say ‘built environment’?

11 Key Principles: Conditions for Success
Working Together Easy Access Momentum Huge task! Really we all need to work together Increasing activity - Danger of conflicting approaches and confusion Implementation will be even slower without consensus Addressing this huge challenge requires an industry body with broad engagement

12 Key Principles: New Organization
Goal is to create an environment which satisfies these conditions: The standards process must provide a clear and transparent mechanism to create international consensus Trusted Open Neutral & Independent Safe IPR Enabling – empower the community

13 Key Principles: Operating Style
Controlling: Give us the money Enabling: The market will decide Technically led Fragmented initiatives Restricted community Process led Open processes Broad engagement International reach Utilise crowd sourcing Accessible information STRATEGIC ISSUE: Style is a key issue we must get right OGC = Open Geospatial Consortium W3C = World Wide Web Consortium

14 Standards Organization
Chapters & Members Standards Committee Standards Committee Executive Technical Architecture Review Implement Review End User Review Commercial Review Open Access Process Infrastructure Guidelines CoBie TBC Product bSDD Projects Projects Projects Technical STRATEGIC ISSUE: Governance requires a clear organisation and a strong process. Ref OGC and W3C Note: Expert Group etc will need to be specified in due course. Note: User domain groups / rooms are open to all Note: Additional ‘Rooms’ / User domain groups should be welcomed. Only limited by the level of interest. New User domain group / rooms will require formal chartering by the standards management board to avoid internal competition and keep order! Rooms are all equal i.e. No hierarchy. MSG ISG TAG Projects Regulator Projects Room Key Groups
