2.5 – Factoring Quadratics Special Cases
2
Special Case #1: Perfect Squares You can recognize this case because the coefficient of x and the constant are both perfect squares. The coefficient of x has to be 2 x a x b!
3
Factor: = 4 = 3 Check 2x4x3 = 24 4 3
4
7 9 Factor: = 9 = 7 Check 2x9x7 = 126
5
= 2 = 5 5 2 Factor: Check 2x5x2 = 20 Always check for common factors first!
6
= y = 4 y 4 Factor: Check 2 x 4 x y = 8y
7
Special Case #2: Difference of Squares You can recognize this case because there are only two terms and there is always a “-” between them!
8
= 3 3 10 = 10 Factor: 10 3
9
8 8 = 11 11 = 8 11 Factor:
10
1 = 1 5 5 1 = 5 Factor: Always check for common factors first!
