Exponential Growth of Goats Introduced to Pinta Island and Exponential Decay of the Condor in Ecuador Eight Grade Math Academic Night BY: DOMENICA BAYAS, BASEM BADER, ANALIA CHILUISA

- Did you know that there is only 50-65 condors left in Ecuador ? - Did you know that the goats in Pinta island outcompeted a species of tortoises?

Background Information for Goats Problem: Goats growth in population destroyed a lot in Pinta island. -Goats reproduce extremely quickly, most females can breed twice a year. -Goats are better competitors and can become stronger predators than other animals. - They adapt to almost any environment - Goats were introduced to the island of Pinta and grew in population causing a lot of destruction. -Common name: Feral Goats. -Introduced to Galapagos in 1959 by fisherman Bernardo Gutierrez. - Today the population status of these goats in Pinta island is: eradicated.

Background Information for Condor Condor: One of Ecuador’s iconic animals is endangered, the Andean Condor. - Largest flying land bird, black with white neck and bald heads, eat mostly dead animals, live about 50 years. -Condor nests once a year and lay only one egg. -They are monogamous. -From 200 declines have continued in Ecuador an they are now critically endangered. -Between 50 - 65 birds left in the wild in Ecuador. -Decline due to: persecution by humans, poisoning, lack of food, and destruction of nesting grounds and habitat.

What is Being Done to Prevent This Problems Goats: -The population of goats has been eradicated in Pinta island. -There are some plans to eradicate goats in other islands of Galapagos. Condor: -The Ministry of Environment has a plan and an environmental education plan to inform people about this bird. -There is a monitoring plan and new laws that punish people who hurt a condor with 5 years of prison.

Our Lab Growth (Goats) Research question: - Did the population of goats in Pinta island grow exponentially? We used initial and final number of goats in Pinta island (3 in 1959 and 20,000 in 1971). Created a table with those values. Approximated a growth factor (with calculator) for the 12 years (2.083) Filled the table by multiplying each value by the growth factor to get the next value. Used initial amount and growth factor to write the equation.

Calculations Goats Goats: 1.To find the population amount after 1 year: we used the equation and plugged in the values then solved it, p= 3(2.083 1 ) p= 6 2. To find the population amount after 2 years :we used the equation and plugged in the values then solved it, p=3(2.83 2 ) p= 13 3.We did this until 12 years changing the exponent depending on the number of years.

Data Collected (Goats) Goats: p= population of goats t= time in years

Our Lab Decay (Condor) Reaserch question: - Is the population of condors in Ecuador decaying exponentially? Used the table with data for several years (1991-2014) of the condor population. Calculated the decay factor for each pair of values in the table by dividing a value by the previous one. We obtained 4 different decay factors. Averaged those. With initial amount and decay factor wrote the equation.

Calculations Condor 1.For finding the decay factor we divided each number in the chart by the previous one, averaged them and divided them by 4: 100/200= 0.5 + 70/100= 0.7 + 60/70= 0.86 + 50/60= 0.83 = 0.72 2.We knew the initial amount so we created the equation.

Data Collected (Condor) Condor: p= population of condors t= time in years

Conclusions for Goats In conclusion the goats were a threat to Pinta island and the species living there. The population did grow exponentially after only 3 were in the island at first. The population grew about 2.083 each year. If this species of goats wouldn’t have been eradicated they would have destroyed much more, more species would be extinct, and they could have spread to other islands in Galápagos.

Conclusions for Condor In conclusion the Condor population is seriously in danger and if we don’t take care of this we might run out of condors. The population is decaying exponentially since we recorded the data from 1991. The population is decreasing at a rate of 0,72 each year. At this rate the condors in Ecuador will be extinct in about 60 years from 1991. – P= 200(0.72 10 ) p= 7.8 The equation shows that in year 2056 there will about 8 condors left in Ecuador

Suggestions Goats Luckily the specie of goats in the island of Pinta have been eradicated I think that if there are more goats in any other islands of Galápagos they should completely eradicate them.

Suggestions Condor Many things are already being done to help stop the decrease of condor population. I think the ministry of environment should make publicity for this problem. We could also introduce more condors of the same specie back to Ecuador. Make more campaigns for taking care of the environment.
