2 Liberals v. Conservatives LIBERALS - believe in government action to achieve equal opportunity and equality for all. It is the duty of the government to alleviate social ills and to protect civil liberties and individual and human rights. Believe the role of the government should be to guarantee that no one is in need. *Liberal policies generally emphasize the need for the government to solve problems. CONSERVATIVES - believe in personal responsibility, limited government, free markets, individual liberty, traditional American values and a strong national defense. Believe the role of government should be to provide people the freedom necessary to pursue their own goals. *Conservative policies generally emphasize empowerment of the individual to solve problems. The terms "left" and "right" define opposite ends of the political spectrum. In the United States, liberals are referred to on the left and conservatives are referred to on the right. On the U.S. political map, blue represents the Democratic Party (Liberal) and red represents the Republican party (Conservative)

3 Suffrage History Suffrage: the legal right to vote 1850s was the era of white male suffrage WOMAN SUFFRAGE: Women were not allowed to vote yet the Constitution never restricted women from not being able to vote 1820s in Tennessee school board elections-> women could vote in some places during local elections but it wasn’t widely accepted 1st women voted in 1807 in New Jersey, state legislatures didn’t like that women had the choice to vote and worked quickly to amend the constitution 1869 Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton created National Woman Suffrage Association with a goal to give women the right to vote 1st suffrage bill issued in 1868 and each year after until 1893 Wyoming was first state to grant women right to vote and people tried to keep them from entering union in 1889 because they allowed women to vote 1917 the national women’s party organized an around-clock picket line at the white house and they were arrested and went on hunger strikes, this was embarrassing to President Wilson and so in 1919 he introduced 19th amendment to congress-> passed in 1920

4 Suffrage History Continued AFRICAN AMERICAN SUFFRAGE: 15th amendment guaranteed suffrage to African American males in 1870 but people kept coming up with ways to not allow them to vote -registrars would close their offices when blacks entered -threatened blacks with los of their homes -locate polling places far away from black neighborhoods at last minute - disenfranchised blacks -literacy tests -grandfather clause Civil rights movement led by MLKJ congress passed civil rights laws Civil Rights Act of 1957 prevented anyone from interfering with another person’s right to vote in national elections Civil rights act of 1964 forbade using any registration requirement in an unfair or discriminatory manner Voting Rights of 1965 made the 15th amendment an effective part of constitution

5 Disenfranchisement Effectively removes the right a person or group of people has to vote Disfranchisement may occur explicitly through law, or implicitly by intimidation or by placing unreasonable registration or identification impediments in the path of voters.
