2 Carlos Cristóbal Pinto TranSUrban Project  Several Small and Medium-Sized Cities in Europe are considering the introduction of Rapid Transit Systems (Tramway, Light Rail, Guided Busway and Trolleybus, etc.); others have implemented them with success.  Costly investment, complete re-organisation of the urban road network… many difficulties in implementing and operating such systems in these cities.  Additional problems of funding.  The process can be facilitated if the indirect benefits are taken into consideration from the beginning (environmental benefits, urban regeneration, city aesthetics, employment creation, social and economic development, etc.). 3 Carlos Cristóbal Pinto TranSUrban Project  Aim: To analysis the development and operation of Urban Transit Systems (Light Rail Transit, Tramway, Guided Busway and Trolleybus) in small and medium-sized cities, through innovative strategies towards sustainable development and urban regeneration.  Operation supported by the European Union within the framework of INTERREG IIIC Inter-regional Co-operation Programme.  Budget: 1,44 million € (59% of which is funded by the EU).  6 partner cities: Volos (Greece), Nea Ionia Magnesia (Greece), Cambridge (United Kingdom), Livorno (Italy), Valdemoro (Madrid, Spain) and Linz (Austria). (2005) New Guided Transport Systems on the basis of added value generated by new urban developments Linz (Austria): 188.968 inhab (2006) Tram system in operation Awareness of PT Stakeholders, investors and users; potential effects of PT investments Livorno (Italy): 155.986 inhab (2005) Feasibility study for Rapid Transit Lane and more accessible PT system Volos y Nea Ionia (Greece): 82.439 and 66.017 inhab (2001) Strategic Plan for development of new Transit System such as Light Tram, including funding options, raising public awareness, consultation with responsible bodies and liaison with Central Government Agencies and suppliers

5 Carlos Cristóbal Pinto TranSUrban Project The results are expected to provide added value and will be disseminated to other cities EXPECTED OUTPUTS  Best Practice Guidelines for implementing and operating urban transit systems.  Technical, Planning, Design, Appraisal and Implementation Manual for city authorities and agencies.  Guide to Evaluation of Socio-Economic Development Impacts (including Urban Regeneration potential).  Intermodality and Accompanying Measures Guidance.  Financial Analysis and Funding Procedures Guidelines.  Institutional and Legal Frameworks and Requirements, City Governance considerations.
