The Church of Christ (Ekklesia)

“Silver and gold I do not have, but what I have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” ~Apostle Peter

29 Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. 30 Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” 31 After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly. ~Acts 4

12 The apostles performed many signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon’s Colonnade. 13 No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people. ~Acts 5

14 Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number. 15 As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by. ~Acts 5

Before:After: ~Persecution/Jail Time~Continued Boldness ~Threats~Huge Response ~Prayer for Boldness~Incredible Healings ~The Place is Shaken~Peter’s Shadow?

32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. 33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. ~Acts 4

33b And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all 34 that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales 35 and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need. ~Acts 4

36 Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means “son of encouragement”), 37 sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles’ feet. ~Acts 4

1 Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property. 2 With his wife’s full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself, but brought the rest and put it at the apostles’ feet. ~Acts 5

3 Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? 4 Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? ~Acts 5

4b And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.” 5 When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died. And great fear seized all who heard what had happened. ~Acts 5

6 Then some young men came forward, wrapped up his body, and carried him out and buried him. 7 About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. 8 Peter asked her, “Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the land?” “Yes,” she said, “that is the price.” ~Acts 5

9 Peter said to her, “How could you conspire to test the Spirit of the Lord? Listen! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also.” ~Acts 5

10 At that moment she fell down at his feet and died. Then the young men came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband. 11 Great fear seized the whole church and all who heard about these events. ~Acts 5

The story of Ananias and Sapphira is not a Precedent.

It is not a Pattern.

The story of Ananias and Sapphira is not a Precedent. It is not a Pattern. It is a Principle!

1 Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. 2 “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. ~Matthew 6

2b Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. ~Matthew 6

“Giving to God” with the goal of impressing others always leads to spiritual death.

Ananias and Sapphira wanted the reputation of giving all, while keeping part for themselves.

(Buying the reputation of Barnabas, with hearts that were unwilling to pay the price!)

The Church (Ekklesia can be a very dangerous place!)

That’s why we never give more in public than we are willing to give in private.

The desire for human recognition will never sustain a life of “God Sized” devotion.

Refusing to sacrifice, can be just as deadening, because your self- centeredness is never challenged, and your heart for God is never “asked” to grow!
