Word Splash Review! Turn in inventions S.O.S. response (unless you already texted it in yesterday! ) Take out your class notes. In 2 or 3 sentences, string together the terms below to refresh your memory on what we covered on Friday! –Industrial Revolution –Capitalism –Inventions –Patents –Investors

Innovations in Production Today’s LEQ: What motivates people to invent and be innovative?

An Explosion in Industrial Growth Improvements in technology helped to expand American industry in the late 1800s –Improved power networks, communicative technology, and transportation Companies that served local markets could now sell their goods nationwide

An Explosion in Industrial Growth Business owners knew they could profit from expanding their market They needed to create systems of mass production

New Ways to Manage Work Factories were built in the early 1800s with machines capable of producing goods in large quantities (mass production) –Skilled artisans were no longer needed to craft individual parts –Unskilled workers ran the machines while supervisors managed the day-to-day operations Give an example of skilled labor vs. unskilled labor

Division of Labor Increases Productivity Engineers reorganized factory work to increase productivity Frederick W. Taylor promoted division of labor –Each worker performed a single task and was trained to work faster by reducing wasted motion Speed boosted productivity and increase profits Break for Tic Mark Activity

The Assembly Line Increases Productivity Henry Ford created the assembly line to mass produce automobiles –No wasted motion –Workers stood in one place all day while a conveyor belt brought the work to them –The process was divided into 84 steps. Each worker was trained to do just one step. The time needed to assemble a Model T Ford fell from 12 hours to less than 6 hours! By 1927, Ford produced more than 15 million Model Ts! Break for “I Love Lucy” Video Clip and Face Plant Activity

Face Plant Activity!

Design a Face Requirements: –Takes up the whole paper –Has a head, hair, eyes, mouth, and nose –Add extra features like glasses, facial hair, etc. –Use at least two colors

Assembly Line Jobs Person 1: Draws outline of head and hair Person 2: Draws eyes and mouth Person 3: Draws ears, nose and any facial hair Person 4: Adds extra features such as glasses, etc. Person 5: Colors in anything that needs to be colored in.

SURPRISE! There is no prize, so we don’t really need to count up your finished products… Please put back all the markers, bring me unused paper, and throw out the extra faces. Make sure everybody has a copy of the “Face Plant” Activity Reflection. Read through the questions on the top half.

Think, Ink, Share 1.Were all the faces you produced identical, or are there differences? Does the model face look better than the duplicates? 2.What factors of the assembly line did you consider difficult? What problems did you encounter? 3.What factors of the assembly line worked well? Were there any benefits to producing the faces this way? 4.What are the pros and cons to a consumer purchasing goods made on an assembly line? 5.Which method of production did you prefer and why? Producing the face from start to finish on your own or using the assembly line?

Impact of Mass Production Increased productivity resulted in cheaper goods However, a factory could operate with fewer workers Those who remained had to perform the same dull task all day long, but at a faster pace Individual creativity and skill was not valued
