6 Bible Survey - Zechariah
Zechariah 4:6-9 Then he said to me, "This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the LORD of hosts. 7 Who are you, O great mountain? Before Zerubbabel you shall become a plain. And he shall bring forward the top stone amid shouts of 'Grace, grace to it!'"

7 Bible Survey - Zechariah
Purpose of Writing: Like Haggai (and all the prophets), Zechariah wrote to encourage the people. Ezra lists him as one of the influential voices in the rebuilding of Jerusalem (5:1; 6:14). Zechariah had a deep-seated and divinely-authored vision of Israel’s future and he described that vision to all who would listen. His vision served to strengthen the people, to encourage them, to embolden them.

Purpose of Writing: Zechariah also has a robust view of the sovereignty of God in world affairs, describing events from God’s point of view, rather than man’s, and attributing results to God’s actions as primary catalysts rather than man’s.

9 Bible Survey - Zechariah
Zechariah 1:8-11 I saw in the night, and behold, a man riding on a red horse! He was standing among the myrtle trees in the glen, and behind him were red, sorrel, and white horses. 9 Then I said, 'What are these, my lord?' The angel who talked with me said to me, 'I will show you what they are…These are they whom the LORD has sent to patrol the earth.' 11 And they answered the angel of the LORD, 'We have patrolled the earth, and behold, all the earth remains at rest.'

Zechariah 6:7 When the strong horses came out, they were impatient to go and patrol the earth. And he said, "Go, patrol the earth." So they patrolled the earth.

The Angel of the Lord Zechariah 3:4 And the angel said to those who were standing before him, "Remove the filthy garments from him." And to him he said, "Behold, I have taken your iniquity away from you, and I will clothe you with pure vestments."

The Branch Zechariah 6:11 Take from them silver and gold, and make a crown, and set it on the head of Joshua, the son of Jehozadak, the high priest.

The Dwelling God Zechariah 8:3 Thus says the LORD: I have returned to Zion and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem. Zechariah 8:7-8 Thus says the LORD of hosts: behold, I will save my people from the east country and from the west country, 8 and I will bring them to dwell in the midst of Jerusalem. And they shall be my people, and I will be their God. Zechariah 8:23 Thus says the LORD of hosts: In those days ten men from the nations of every tongue shall take hold of the robe of a Jew, saying, 'Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.'

The Humble King Zechariah 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

The Rejected Shepherd Zechariah 11: Then I said to them, "If it seems good to you, give me my wages; but if not, keep them." And they weighed out as my wages thirty pieces of silver. 13 Then the LORD said to me, "Throw it to the potter"- the lordly price at which I was priced by them.

17 Bible Survey - Zechariah
The Pierced One Zechariah 12:10 And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn.

18 Bible Survey - Zechariah
Place in the Canon Historically, Zechariah provides us with another portrait of the post-exilic community. Theologically, Zechariah shows us that God is in sovereign control of history and he will bring it around to his ends for his own glory and for the good of his people. Devotionally, we learn that we can take courage in the knowledge that God will work all things together for our good. In response, we must trust his leadership and obey his kingly orders.
