3. Section One: Comprehension 50 marks Read all three comprehensions carefully including ALL questions Choose the part B from one and one from A ENSURE IT IS THE B YOU ARE ABLE TO ANSWER

4. Comprehension Read the comprehension again, read the questions carefully Underline any evidence (quotes) Ensure you use point, quote, explain – use a brainstorm if you need to Check you have answered the question asked and refer back to the question

5. Patterns: 2011 Impression you formed of characters/ Three words that capture the atmosphere in the passage/ Describing an image/ what sort of atmosphere/ why you would or would not/ Agree or disagree 2010 Three reasons why terrifying/ Based on what you have read would you agree/ In your opinion what makes people, give reasons for your answers 2009 Advantages and disadvantages/ suitable picture to accompany the text/ What does the text tell us/ What do you learn about/ Favourite description/ How does the author create suspense

6. Part B: 50 marks Choose this carefully, pick the one you are most comfortable with- speech, diary entry, blog, letter, talk etc Brainstorm/ Mind map if you need to Ensure you have answered the question- a talk (formal language), diary entry (informal), speech (argument or persuasion)

Patterns: 2011- list of things you would bring to space and justify these choices/ Talk/ Letter of application 2010- Short motivational talk/ Reasons why you should be chosen/ Persuasive piece for the internet (activities) 2009- Informal letter/ diary entries/ blog/ short talk 2008- letter of complaint/ write about invention of past that had impact on present day lifestyle/ Encouraging talk

8. Composition 100 marks Most difficult part of the paper Brainstorm/ Mindmap/ Planning essential Do not get carried away, read each option carefully Ensure you refer to the question asked

9. Composition Options include, short story, personal account, diary, speech, talk, newspaper article, magazine article etc Ensure you write in the mode asked, if you are asked to write a newspaper article on a serious topic, use formal language. If you are asked to write a persuasive speech, ensure you have a strong argument to back up your chosen topic and use persuasive language.

10. Examples: Try to use some of these words and phrases in your writing. Remember to write in a forceful manner. You want people to agree with you! I am speaking to you today because... I have heard a rumour that... This needs to be dealt with We can do without this... It will ruin our quality of life. How unfair! No-one but a complete idiot will believe that... Now... Surely...
