During a Storm  Stay indoors during the storm  Drive only if it’s absolutely necessary  Travel in the day  Inform others of schedule/route  Use main roads  Watch for signs of frostbite & hypothermia  Maintain ventilation/space when using heaters  3ft from flammable objects  Flush away toxic gasses  If you’re planning on being away set your house no cooler than 55 degrees F

Carbon Monoxide  Never use gas/propane/natural gas/charcoal burning devices inside an enclosed space  Install carbon monoxide alarms in central locations  All levels  Sleeping areas  If alarms sound, move quickly to a fresh air location outdoors or open window/door  Call for help  What are the symptoms of CO poisoning?

Hypothermia  The balance between the body’s heat production and heat loss tips toward heat loss for a prolonged period of time  Symptoms  Shivering (good sign)  Slow/shallow breathing  Confusion and memory loss  Drossiness or exhaustion  Slurred/mumbled speech  Loss of coordination  If severe – unconsciousness without signs of breathing or a pulse

Hypothermia  Remove any wet clothes  Protect person from wind/draft and further heat loss  Move to warm dry shelter  Warm armpits, neck, torso, and groin  Offer warm liquids – avoid alcohol and caffeine TypeTemperature Range Mild hypothermia90-95 F Moderate hypothermia82-90 F Severe hypothermiaLower than 82 F

Be Prepared  Have a plan  Have supplies  Know the risks  Understand the symptoms  Communicate
