3 A. 3 Changes 1. Income a. wages--set amount per hour b. overtime pay--time and a half after 40 hours c. salary--certain amount paid per year d. commission--% of sales made. --some people don ’ t like this

4 2. Fringe benefits--extra financial rewards other than money a. insurance--medical, dental, life, disability b. paid holidays, vacations, sick leave c. bonuses, pension plans, tuition aid, child care 3. Lifestyle a. Fulltime --more hours of work --MUST be at work ALL the time! --make more money

5 II. Losing A Job --laid off is beyond a worker ’ s control --fired is the worker ’ s fault

Common Reasons for Firing Employees 1. disrespect 2. not getting along 3. not following rules 4. causing trouble 5. drugs/alcohol 6. being rude/bad language 7. lying 8. acting dissatisfied 9. making costly mistakes 10. making fun of coworkers 11. being lazy 12. acting superior/bossy 13. being late or absent

7 B. Take Positive Action 1. if you lose job, be positive 2. take a look at yourself---CHANGES????? a. personality b. education c. values and goals 3. Correct what you did wrong mechanic, teacher

8 III. Being Promoted A. Promotion--move up to a higher position with the company B. must be patient and do a GREAT job C. available when a person retires, quits, is fired or is promoted

9 D. How to get promoted? 1. strive to do well 2. good attendance 3. positive attitude 4. get along 5. volunteer for extra work 6. look for ways to learn 7. additional education/training 8. be willing to accept more responsibility 9. desire for new challenges 10. be willing to accept change

Reasons for Changing Jobs 1. problems with boss or coworkers 2. health problems 3. transportation problems 4. desire to own your own business 5. company closing 6. elimination of your job 7. desire for better pay/benefits 8. desire for more opportunities for advancement 9. desire for better working conditions or hours

11 *Some people have good reasons for changing jobs. Before you make this decision, ask yourself these questions: 1. What are my real reasons for leaving this job? Is my new job going to be better? 2. Am I getting along with my boss and my fellow employees? Have you talked this over with your boss? 3. Have I given myself and the job a chance?

12 *DON ’ T BE IN A RUSH TO CHANGE JOBS. THE GRASS IS NOT ALWAYS GREENER ON THE OTHER SIDE!!!!!!!!!
