Putting nitrogen fixation to work for smallholder farmers in Africa Pawe Cluster Partnership: Achievements, Lessons & Way Forwards Getachew Yilma Desalegn Teshale ILRI-N2Africa Annual Partners Review and Planning Workshop Lalibela Auditorium, ILRI Campus, Addis Ababa 27-29 January 2016

Putting nitrogen fixation to work for smallholder farmers in Africa 1. Partnership objective Nurturing long-term sustainability of  Knowledge transfer ( trainings, consultative, mini meetings,)  Technology dissemination ( campaign strategies )  Efficient input supply chains (improved seed, inoculants,..)  Market linkages ( grain yield, semi processed, )

Putting nitrogen fixation to work for smallholder farmers in Africa …..cont Common benefit among the partners. Achieving food security through legume crops

Putting nitrogen fixation to work for smallholder farmers in Africa The Scope: Key partners and role mapping AKF Farm ers Mama Union MBI N2 Africa PARC BoA

Putting nitrogen fixation to work for smallholder farmers in Africa The Scope: Key partners and role mapping Zonal &District agric. offices PARC-EIAR Farmers coops/unions NGOs, AKF, MBI, N2A

Putting nitrogen fixation to work for smallholder farmers in Africa Achievements and Progresses  Beneficiary farmers 2362 (1904M, 458F) Direct beneficiaries: 775 farmers ( adapt, Demos) Through field days & evaluation events 621 ( 465M, 156 F) Indirect beneficiary farmers from N2Africa plot were 966 farmers (739M, 227F)

Putting nitrogen fixation to work for smallholder farmers in Africa The Scope: focus crops & Geographic coverage  Fo cus crops: soyabean & common bean N2A implementing Districts: Pawe, Jawi, Mandura and Dibate.(4) The districts cropping potential is taken in to consideration. 9 Putting nitrogen fixation to work for smallholder farmers in Africa Capacity development  Awareness creation for partners from N2A target districts (kick off 2015)  Agricultural experts and DA (24M,12F)  Partnership meeting ( farmer unions/coops, BoA, NGOs, Gender affaires, etc)  Challenges of soybean marketing

Input distribution was made directly to the farmers.

Putting nitrogen fixation to work for smallholder farmers in Africa Market Linkage  Market out let was the challenge for soyabean crop  Integrated work of Partners namely N2A, PARC, AKF, Unions & BoA have been involved  Finally Mama farmers Union & AKF has signed contractual agreement.  The union is supplying up to 3000 Qts of Soyabean with reasonable price though world soya market is declining.  An excellent success for the Pawe cluster & the project as a whole.

Putting nitrogen fixation to work for smallholder farmers in Africa Achievements and Progresses Key achievements: Analysis and Inference of Agronomic trials –Analysis of demonstrations/RMA trials (treatment effects, responses across locations, etc.) –Analysis of technology evaluations and preferences –Analysis of adaptation trials (farmers feedbacks, comparison of yields from own & N2Africa plots, etc.)

Putting nitrogen fixation to work for smallholder farmers in Africa Soya bean Demonstration trial over all result analysis.

Putting nitrogen fixation to work for smallholder farmers in Africa …..Statment of the agrement  This contractual agreement will put a wonderfull market sustainabilitycontractual

Putting nitrogen fixation to work for smallholder farmers in Africa Women evaluation soyabean

Putting nitrogen fixation to work for smallholder farmers in Africa Youth evaluation of soyabean

Putting nitrogen fixation to work for smallholder farmers in Africa Mixed group evaluation The over all farmer evaluation result of the Demonstration trials for the common bean crop

Putting nitrogen fixation to work for smallholder farmers in Africa Farmer assessment of the adaptation trial

Putting nitrogen fixation to work for smallholder farmers in Africa Lessons Learned technology evaluation and discussion was the best method to expand the legume technology.  Market opportunity of soya bean will intensely increase soya bean production. Recommendations from analysis of: The multi stake holder partner ship currently is good should be continiued. The agreement to soyabean market is beeter to include other Unions like Anzina

Putting nitrogen fixation to work for smallholder farmers in Africa Recommondation cont.. Agronomic trials in particular. –Soya bean has good response to the improved technology (inoculant & DAP) in many cases. But in some farms no response at all. –It is better to apply inputs soil test based to get acute response. –The inoculant HB EAL 429 for common bean dosen’t response in most farms. There fore it is better to identify the correct compatible inoculant for Pawe area for maximum N fixation.

Putting nitrogen fixation to work for smallholder farmers in Africa Opportunities Identified Appresiable cooperation of woreda and Zonal BoAs. Farmers positive attitude to use improved technologies and increase legume production. Availablity of the Mama and Anzina unions to sale inputs and buy grain yield. The positive outlook of AKF to buy the Pawe grain. The presence of inoculant producer in the country MBI

Putting nitrogen fixation to work for smallholder farmers in Africa Research center ( improved varity, information… D/t NGOs working closely on agriculture, high potential land for soyabean and common bean production, Community based seed producer farmers

Putting nitrogen fixation to work for smallholder farmers in Africa Main Challenges Non response of the HB EAL 429 common bean inoculant for the area. The distance of the area from the central market.

Putting nitrogen fixation to work for smallholder farmers in Africa Way Forwards Much emphasis should be given for capacity development e.g. trainings both for farmers & agric experts, capacitating farmer coops/unions Inoculants producers should work closely with woreda agricultural offices, & farmer cooperatives.

Putting nitrogen fixation to work for smallholder farmers in Africa Way Forwards Decisions to be capitalized based on last year’s learning Proposed Activities for Planning of 2016 Exploring the nodulation status, native bradyrhizobia population nodulating common bean and their N 2 fixation effectiveness harbored in Metekel zone.

Putting nitrogen fixation to work for smallholder farmers in Africa General objective  To explore the rhizobial population, their effectiveness and nodulation and productivity common bean in Metekel zone
