7 Bacteria Single celled organisms invisible to the naked eye Grow in colonies and reproduce rapidly in favourable conditions Double every twenty minutes. Each cell increases in size and then splits in two Unfavourable conditions – may form spores and become dormant. Spores can survive long periods of time and in conditions that will kill many other organisms

8 Definitions of Bacteria Aerobic – bacteria that need oxygen to survive Anaerobic – bacteria that can survive without oxygen Spores – a rounded body which forms inside the bacterial cell when conditions become unfavourable for growth or multiplication. The rest of the cell gradually disintegrates leaving only the spore. Toxin – poisonous waste that can cause food to become contaminated
