UK USES High level Departmental indicator to monitor the Business Plan priority to “Support and develop British Farming and encourage sustainable food production”. Potential being explored for further use within other Government Agencies.

UK USES High level Departmental indicator to monitor the Business Plan priority to “Support and develop British Farming and encourage sustainable food production”. Potential being explored for further use within other Government Agencies.

Research undertaken TAPAS project 2008/09 (FERA & ADAS) Follow up project 2009/10 (ADAS led by FERA) Farm gate balances 2011 – Environment Agency.

Farm gate vs soil surface Source: ADAS

Farm gate vs soil surface Farm gate: Data more readily available More familiar to farmers Soil Surface: More suited as indicator of environmental risk Problems with data availabilty e.g. fodder offtake Depends on data availability, and intended use! BUT.....

Farm gate vs soil surface Farm gate Balance = Fertiliser + N fixation + other Land Inputs + Atmospheric Deposition – Crop and livestock products Soil Surface Balance = Fertiliser + N fixation + Manure spread + Excreta at grazing + other Land Inputs + Atmospheric Deposition - Grass and fodder eaten = Farm gate balance – N volatised prior to spreading

Practicalities – UK approach Soil surface balance calculated using a farm gate approach HOW? Development of fodder balance approach Excretion + Product = Feed and fodder eaten (including grass)

Comparison of results (UK Nitrogen balance)
