THE CASE OF THE MISSING MEATBALLS

It was a dark and stormy afternoon at South Pointe. Seventh grade students were returning from lunch. Mr. Duran sat in his chair with a fresh stain of spaghetti sauce on his shirt. “Mmmmm, what a delicious lunch I just had!” Mr. Duran exclaimed. “I’m completely stuffed. How was school lunch today?” His students looked at him like he was crazy. Suddenly, Ms. Chuang knocked at the door. She whispered to Ms. Rehm (who was heading back to her class after eating lunch), “Has anyone seen Mrs. Johnson’s lunch? She had spaghetti and meatballs, but it seems to have gone missing.” Ms. Rehm thought for a moment, going back in her memory to think if she had seen anything. She turned to Mr. Duran and asked, “Mr. Duran, did you see anything? I think you were in Mrs. Johnson’s room just before lunch started.” Mr. Duran widened his eyes a little and quickly said, “no.” He stood up quickly, knocking his lunch box off of the table. When it hit the floor, a sandwich and an apple rolled out. Mr. Duran scanned the room, then asked the students, “Does anyone know anything about Mrs. Johnson’s missing lunch?” THE CASE OF THE MISSING MEATBALLS

QUESTION Who do you think stole Mrs. Johnson’s lunch? THE CASE OF THE MISSING MEATBALLS

CLAIM (ARGUMENT)  Mr. Duran stole Mrs. Johnson’s lunch!!! THE CASE OF THE MISSING MEATBALLS

EVIDENCE (CONCRETE DETAILS) Read the story again and write down pieces of evidence you find in the story that support your claim. You should try to find at least three, but the more you have the stronger your claim. THE CASE OF THE MISSING MEATBALLS

EVIDENCE (CONCRETE DETAILS)  Spaghetti sauce stain  Mr. Duran says he is full  Mr. Duran was in Mrs. Johnson’s room at the beginning of lunch.  Mr. Duran’s lunch box still had a sandwich and an apple. THE CASE OF THE MISSING MEATBALLS

REASONING (COMMENTARY) Use the evidence you collected and create an explanation of how that evidence proves Mr. Duran stole Mrs. Johnson’s lunch. THE CASE OF THE MISSING MEATBALLS

REASONING (COMMENTARY)  Mr. Duran says he is full, but he didn’t eat the lunch he packed  He has a spaghetti sauce stain on his shirt and Mrs. Johnson’s lunch was spaghetti with meatballs.  Mr. Duran was in Mrs. Johnson’s room at the start of lunch time, when her lunch was stolen. THE CASE OF THE MISSING MEATBALLS

RESPONSE #1 Mr. Duran stole Ms. Johnson’s lunch! He has a spaghetti sauce stain on his shirt. He says he is full. He was in Mrs. Johnson’s room when her lunch was stolen!! And his lunch is still in his lunch box. So he took it!!! THE CASE OF THE MISSING MEATBALLS

RESPONSE #1 Mr. Duran stole Mrs. Johnson’s lunch! He has a spaghetti sauce stain on his shirt. He says he is full. He was in Mrs. Johnson’s room when her lunch was stolen!! And his lunch is still in his lunch box. So he took it!!! THE CASE OF THE MISSING MEATBALLS That is the CLAIM

THE CASE OF THE MISSING MEATBALLS That is the CLAIM and the EVIDENCE

THE CASE OF THE MISSING MEATBALLS Where is the REASONING??

RESPONSE #2 Mr. Duran stole Mrs. Johnson’s lunch! He has a spaghetti sauce stain on his shirt. Mrs. Johnson’s lunch was spaghetti and meatballs, which matches the stain, so Mr. Duran must’ve eaten it! THE CASE OF THE MISSING MEATBALLS Based on the Scientific Explanation Slide, decide if this is a quality response?

RESPONSE #2 Mr. Duran stole Mrs. Johnson’s lunch! He has a spaghetti sauce stain on his shirt. Mrs. Johnson’s lunch was spaghetti and meatballs, which matches the stain, so Mr. Duran must’ve eaten it! THE CASE OF THE MISSING MEATBALLS That is the CLAIM

THE CASE OF THE MISSING MEATBALLS That is the CLAIM and the EVIDENCE

THE CASE OF THE MISSING MEATBALLS Is this enough EVIDENCE???

RESPONSE #3 Mr. Duran stole Mrs. Johnson’s lunch! (1)He has a spaghetti sauce stain on his shirt. (2)He says he is full. (3)He was in Mrs. Johnson’s room at the start of lunch time, and his lunch is still in his lunch box.
