2 WHAT IS A FINGER DISLOCATION??? occurs when the bones of the finger are moved (dislocated) from their normal position

3 PIP JOINT Proximal interphalangeal joint proximal interphalangeal joint dislocation is the most common type of finger dislocation, which occurs in the first finger joint from the knuckles VOLAR PLATE forms floor of PIP joint and separates the joint space from the flexor tendons Hyperextension injury

4 MECHANISM OF INJURY relatively common in athletics, especially sports involving ball-handling Jamming force applied to the tip of the finger Overextension of the finger

5 TREATMENT Realigning of the bones: pull the finger back into place Splint or taping: securing the recently realigned finger to the healthy finger next to it Ice: 15-30 minutes to reduce pain and swelling Elevation: hold finger above the level of your heart to drain fluid and reduce swelling

6 RECOVERY Rest: avoid using the finger Ice: 15-20 minutes every day Compression: limit swelling Elevation Medication: reduce pain and swelling Rehabilitation: ball squeeze and finger extension

7 PREVENTION Wear proper padding and protective gear during physical activities Avoid breaking falls with your hands
