3 Normal Distribution The normal distribution of a set of data is a very important class of statistical distributions.

4 Properties of Normal Curve The curve is bell-shaped with the highest point over the mean μ It is symmetrical about the vertical line through the mean μ The curve approaches the horizontal axis but never touches or crosses it The transition points between cupping upward and downward occur above μ + σ and μ – σ

5 Empirical Rule For a distribution that is symmetrical and bell-shaped Approximately 68% of the data values will lie within one standard deviation on each side of the mean Approximately 95% of the data values will lie within two standard deviation on each side of the mean Approximately 99.7% of the data values will lie within three standard deviations on each side of the mean
