2 Metaphor a term or phrase is applied to something to which it is not literally applicable in order to suggest a resemblance without using like or as Example: “A mighty fortress is our God.”

3 Simile a figure of speech in which two unlike things are explicitly compare using like or as Example: “she is like a rose.”

4 Hyperbole an extravagant statement or figure of speech not intended to be taken literally Example: “to wait an eternity.”

5 Idiom an expression whose meaning is not predictable from the usual meanings of its constituent elements Example: “kick the bucket”

6 Assonance resemblance of sounds. Example: "that dolphin-torn, that gong-tormented sea"
