Federation of Chiropractic Licensing Boards Cinco de Mayo, 2006 Portland Marriott Downtown

CVA and the Cervical Spine A project of the Association of Chiropractic Colleges Gerard W. Clum, D.C. Life Chiropractic College West Project Committee Chair

Throughout my career I have heard the statement from boards of examiners that your charge is “to protect the public”. The Association of Chiropractic Colleges seeks your support of a project that will protect the public, the chiropractor, the profession and you.

Project Goal: To provide the practicing chiropractor with the latest information regarding the incidence, avoidance, causation, prevention and detection of cerebro- vascular accidents associated, causatively or temporally, with cervical spine adjusting

For example: Provocative testing is “out”. George’s, DeKlyne’s etc are NOT recommended and possibly contraindicated We may not cause it, but if in progress we may have the ability to aggravate it Many patients will tell you a CVA is underway

Project Rationale: A significant percentage of CVAs reported secondary to cervical spine adjusting are thought to be in progress when the patient presents for care. Therefore emphasis must shift from causation to recognition of presentation

Project methods: To provide a two-hour curriculum related to current topics associated with CVA and cervical spine adjusting through lectures, DVD presentations, VHS presentations and streaming video online To provide these offerings on as cost effective basis as possible

Project costs (for the DC): Streaming video: no cost DVD: $10.00 (shipping and handling) VHS $10.00 (shipping and handling) Lectures: Variable

Project support: This project has been funded by the Association of Chiropractic Colleges A grant of $10,000 has been received by the ACC from NCMIC Order fulfillment will be completed by Dynamic Chiropractic

FCLB Project Support Desired: The passage of a resolution acknowledging, encouraging, supporting and applauding the ACC for the efforts associated with this project The passage of a resolution encouraging all member boards to individually support the efforts of the ACC in this project

State Board Support Desired: The enactment of rules, regulations or policies that will cause this subject matter to be a key focus of continuing education requirements on an ongoing basis The advisement of license holders of the availability of this curriculum and encouragement for this to be a CE priority

State Board Support Desired: To cooperate with the state association(s) in your state to cause this subject area to be a priority on the part of the association(s) To cooperate with chiropractic programs in or near your state to see that this curriculum is offered and supported

FCLB and State Board Support Desired To support the ACC, to support you in protecting the public

Association of Chiropractic Colleges Thank you for your consideration of our efforts to step up and to do the right thing for the public and for the profession
