1 Hannah Roberts – Head of Delivery Rebecca Kenner – Parliamentary Communications Officer

2  Objective to increase awareness of the work, process and relevance of Parliament as well as encourage greater engagement with both the House of Commons and House of Lords.  Established as result of report by Modernisation Committee.  Piloted in two regions in 2008, now a national service.

3  Two teams: ◦Regional Delivery ◦Procedural Engagement  Additional workstreams: Training the Trainer, Universities and Speakers Programme  Remote based working  To date 26,000 people have engaged with the service.

4  Regional based service  Partnership working – identifying shared objectives  Delivery of training and workshops  All sectors including; voluntary sector, businesses, local authorities, universities, healthcare providers  Network and relationship building to create multiplier effect

5 Example events:  Bristol Disability Equality Forum  The Home Office  Sheffield University – Journalism Studies  Voluntary Sector North West  Nottingham CVS  Tees Valley Business Ladies Networking

6 Training the Trainer:  11 module resource including session plans, presentations, group exercise and fact sheets.  128 certified trainers to date  Quality assurance via user agreement and observation of session.  On average multiplier effect of 30

7 Procedural Engagement:  Working with Select Committees to improve their public engagement;  Legislative engagement – Public Bill workshops;  “Parliament Talks...” events.

8 Work with Select Committees:  Organise regional visits and evidence gathering sessions;  Publicise inquiries using our regional networks and contacts;  Co-ordinate web forums on third party websites;  Promote inquiries on third party websites;

9 Legislative Engagement – Public Bill Workshops:  Are about individual Bills or how laws are made in general;  Aim to encourage the public to engage with Parliament’s scrutiny of legislation;  Held across the UK;  Following the Queen’s Speech, focus will now be on draft Bills rather than legislation already before Parliament.

10 Parliament Talks... events programme:  Public engagement events focused on a particular theme e.g. Science;  Aim to: - inform about the subject; - Explain the work that Parliament is doing in that area; - show the relevance of Parliament; - show that Parliament as an institution is approachable and willing to engage.
