PRESENTE DEI VERBI REGOLARI -ARE PRESENT TENSE REGULAR -ARE VERBS -Italian infinitives are made up of a stem and an ending. -You already learned that in Italian there are three types of verbs: - are, - ere, and – ire verbs. (There are a few verbs however that end in – rre but dont worry about that for now.) Infinitive (original form of the verb) Stem + Ending English Translation entrare entr + are to enter prendere prend + ere to take; to have sentire sent + ire to hear; to feel

o Infinitives ending in – are are the most numerous. These verbs are formed by dropping the original ending of the verb, - are, and adding the endings -o, -i, -a, -iamo, -ate, -ano to the stem of the verb. For example: PRESENTE DEI VERBI REGOLARI -ARE PRESENT TENSE REGULAR -ARE VERBS SingularPlural io parl o I speaknoi parl iamo we speak tu parl i you (inf.) speakvoi parl ate you (inf.) speak lui parl a he speaksloro parl ano they speak lei parl a she speaks Lei parl a You (form) speak loro parl ano they speak Loro parl ano You (form) speak parl are – to speak

o The present tense in Italian is equivalent to the present indicative and the present progressive ( to be + -ing ) in English. For example: -Paola studi a chimica. Paola studies chemistry. -Oggi studi a per lesame di chimica. Today she is studying for the chemistry exam. -Fabio telefon a a Paola. Fabio calls Paola. OR Fabio is calling Paola. o The present tense may also be used in Italian to express actions intended or planned for the near future. For example: -Pass i a casa mia domani? Are you coming by my house tomorrow? -No, mi dispiace. Domani lavor o. No, Im sorry. Im working tomorrow. PRESENTE DEI VERBI REGOLARI -ARE PRESENT TENSE REGULAR -ARE VERBS

o In double-verb constructions, the first verb is conjugated and the second verb is a dependent infinitive (in the infinitive). For example: Desider i prendere un gelato? Do you want to have anice cream? Non mi piac e ballare. I dont like to dance. o Verbs ending in – care and – gare, like cer care (to look for) and pa gare (to pay for), add an h to the infinitive stem in the tu and noi forms to keep the hard sounds of the c and g : PRESENTE DEI VERBI REGOLARI -ARE PRESENT TENSE REGULAR -ARE VERBS Singular Plural io cerc o noi cerch iamo io pag o noi pag hiamo tu cerc hi voi cerc ate tu pag hi voi pag ate lui/lei/Lei cerc a loro/Loro cerc ano lui/lei/Lei pag a loro/Loro pag ano cercare – to look for pagare – to pay for

o Verbs ending in – iare, like cominc iare (to begin), mang iare (to eat) and stud iare (to study), drop the i from the infinitive stem in the tu and noi forms: PRESENTE DEI VERBI REGOLARI -ARE PRESENT TENSE REGULAR -ARE VERBS Singular Plural io cominci o noi cominc iamo io mangi o noi mang iamo io studi o noi stud iamo tu cominc i voi cominci ate tu mang i voi mangi ate tu stud i voi studi ate lui/lei cominci a loro cominci ano Lei cominci a Loro cominci ano lui/lei mangi a loro mangi ano Lei mangi a Loro mangi ano lui/lei studi a loro studi ano Lei studi a Loro studi ano cominciare – to begin mangiare – to eat studiare – to study

Be sure to create a chart like the one below for each verb conjugation and include the English translation for the infinitive: io ________________noi ________________ tu ________________voi _________________ lui/lei ________________loro ________________ Lei ________________Loro ________________ abitare – to live
