M EDIA SAVVY Brainstorm and discuss how the media could or does impact on the way you feel about your body. Divide up into groups of 3-4. Draw up the following table Who is selling it..? Product being sold Beauty ideals “should look like”

Google some current ads and fill in the table. An example of below: Discuss these as a class. Complete worksheet – getting media Savvy Pt 1 Who is selling it ProductBeauty Ideals A sports starAftershaveStyled hair, fit body A modelMoisturiserTanned, skinny

The media uses lots of tricks to sell products to us. We need to remember that each image is not a true reflection of what the person looks like or an ideal of what we should be aiming to look like.

R ESILIENCE As young people move through puberty they become more aware of themselves in comparison to their peers, particularly in relation to their appearance, shape, weight, their skills and talents. They also become more aware of stereotypes and ideals for how society tells them they should look. We know from our lesson on the media and advertising that these images are not real but sadly too many young people fall into the trap of comparing themselves to these fake ideals. This greatly affects their self esteem, body image and confidence.

R ESILIENCE If we look and compare ourselves to others we will always find someone who is smarter, taller, more attractive, fitter, stronger etc. It is therefore important that we avoid the comparison trap and focus on the good thing with our own bodies and in our life.

R ESILIENCE What is self esteem? What is body image? Why do you think people compare themselves to others? Is making comparisons good or bad for ones self esteem? Why? Complete “The Comparison Trap” handout. Discuss answers as a class.

R ESILIENCE Working in pairs, give students a blank piece of paper and have them write You’re AWESOME because …….. And give a complement about an inner quality their partner possesses e.g honest, trustworthy etc.

“R EAL ” R OLE MODELS Brainstorm what is a role model. Who are your role models? What is a “real role model”?

R EAL ROLE MODELS Think of a person who is your role model in real life, not a famous person or sports start but a regular person. Why are they are real role model? What qualities do they have that you aspire to have? Using your ipad compose a poster for a advertisement looking for a real role model.

B F ’ S AND FR - ENEMIES Friends and peers can have a major influence on a young persons self esteem and confidence. Brainstorm what makes a good friend? Why do you think our friends sometimes do things that are unfriendly? Discuss what is a frenemy?

Assertive- is the express and stand by your opinion in a polite, non intimidating way. Someone with good self esteem can assert themselves. Aggressive – is to take control of a social situation using force (either verbal of physical) and this in turn is often threatening and intimidating to others. Q. Why is it important that as people we learn how to be assertive?

In small groups, read through the scenarios. Discuss in groups and some up with a short positive solution. Act this out to the class.
