What Makes a Good Leader? What do these people have in common? What differentiates these individuals? How do you determine which leaders are good and which ones are not?

What is Leadership? “Leadership is the art of influencing human behavior to accomplish a task in the manner described by the leader.” Qualities: honesty, sense of responsibility, loyal, courage, dependability False Qualities: Quick decisions, physical stature, toughness,

Principles of Leadership Lead by example, make sound and timely decisions, treat those as you would like to be treated in return, know your strengths and weaknesses

Leadership Approaches Autocratic Hostile individuals Dependent persons Democratic Co-operative individuals Persons with team spirit Free Rein (laissez faire) Loners / Individualists

What is a follower? As a follower, you are an apprentice leader practicing duties of a leader Duties include: know your job, tell the truth, follow rules, support your leaders, co-operate, habits and manners, admit mistakes, accept constructive criticism

Leadership of Ralph Ralph: tries to create a society based on survival using a repetition of hope for rescue (fire to signal ships, shelters, drinking water) Ralph = Democracy (brings civilization to the island symbolized with the conch at assemblies) “They obeyed the summons of the conch, partly because Ralph blew it and he was big enough to be a link with the adult world of authority” (50). Ralph’s major flaw is intelligence because he relies on Piggy for advice Democracy is loosing steam at the end of chapter 5 when Ralph proclaims, “Fat lot we are. Three blind mice. I’ll give up” (100).

Jack: wants to live life and have fun (pro hunting in the wilderness) with no clear thought or vision that creates savages out of civilized boys Ralph summoned his wits. “Because the rules are the only thing we’ve got!” But Jack was shouting against him. “Bullocks to the rules! We’re strong – we hunt” (99). Disregard for democratic process at assemblies cutting off Piggy when he said, “Who cares what you believe in – Fatty! I’ve got the conch” (97). Leadership of Jack

Characterization Direct Characterization: author states or describes character’s traits Indirect Characterization: author shows character’s personality through his or her actions, thoughts, feelings and words or by another characters observations Relies on the reader to put together the clues.
