1 Boiling, Freezing, and Melting Water
Using the Celsius scale

2 Freezing Point Water freezes at 0 degrees Celsius.
As temperatures drop into the negatives, water continues to freeze and harden. Temperatures in the Arctic can drop to as low as -89° Celsius! Any temperature below 0° Celsius keeps the water freezing.

3 Melting Point The melting point for water is 0° Celsius.
As temperatures continue to rise, water continues to melt.

4 Don’t get confused! Water’s freezing point and melting point are both at 0° Celsius. Just ask yourself, “Is the temperature getting warmer or colder?”

5 Freezing vs. Melting Freezing occurs when enough heat is removed to cause a phase change. Melting occurs when enough heat is added to cause a phase change from solid to liquid. FUN FACT: Sometimes the difference in temperature between ice and liquid water may be 1 degree Celsius!

6 Caution Hot! Boiling Point of Water
The boiling point of water is at 100° Celsius. Evaporation occurs at a very rapid pace from this point… Caution Hot!
